Gas Distribution Technician

The City of Bloomfield has an opening for a Gas Technician. Candidate must be dependable and show initiative. On-Call capability is required. Salary set by Union contract and will be commensurate with experience. The successful candidate will be subject to a pre-employment physical exam, functionality testing and drug and alcohol testing; as well as random drug and alcohol testing. Position: Gas Distribution Technician

JOB SUMMARY

Performs skilled technical work in the operation of the gas distribution system and regulator stations. Must be able to constantly work around extremely explosive gas and in hazardous conditions. Must be able to respond to after-hours call-outs within 30 minutes. Required to be on-call on a rotating basis.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  1. Ability to make fast mental decisions and ensure safety of all involved.
  2. Monitors and maintains gas distribution system to ensure compliance with all Federal, State and local rules and regulations.
  3. Ability to become qualified under pipeline certification training.
  4. Plans, coordinates and performs pipeline work including gas leaks, main tapping, patrol system, record all excavations, construct shoring devices, pressure test pipeline, conduct pressure tests for contractors, and maintain all valving in proper working condition.
  5. Service and maintain all types of gas meters and regulators used on the system.
  6. Keep extensive records of all activities regarding gas leaks, CO call-outs, locating activities, and pipeline construction.
  7. Ability to respond to service calls with composure and professionalism.
  8. Ability to operate a wide variety of tools and equipment including trencher, back-hoe, dump truck, skid steer, fusion tools, and test equipment.
  9. Confers with DPW, presenting and resolving problems or questions.
  10. Assists in preparing the gas department budget; makes projections of future needs.
  11. Determines materials and supplies required to fulfill routine needs of the department.
  12. Maintains the grounds at the border station and pipeline ROW mowing.
  13. Keeps all tools, trucks, and department equipment in excellent condition.
  14. All other duties as assigned which may require assisting other departments.

  1. Thorough knowledge of the methods and techniques of gas plant operations and gas distribution.
  2. Possess basic knowledge of budget procedures.
  3. Must be able to assess the gas department inventory and maintain an adequate supply of parts necessary for the effective operation of the gas distribution system.
  4. Must be able to apply knowledge as described.
  5. General mechanical ability to work effectively and react quickly to situations that develop.
  6. Ability to make accurate readings and keep accurate records and reports.
  7. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and the public.
